When you hear the words "holistic health" what comes to mind? For me, the image that pops in to my head is of a woman who's mediating and drinking a green juice from greens that she harvested from her own organic garden. Does she eat cookies or watch cable TV? Um no. Does she wear yoga pants, use about essential oils, and talk about how her gluten-free vegan diet healed her candida? Yes. Yes, she does.
The American Holistic Health Association (AHHA) defines holistic health as considering the whole person and how he or she interacts with his or her environment. It emphasizes the connection of mind, body, and spirit. Interesting right? Cause if you are considering your mind and spirit when making food choices, there is absolutely a place for cookies in holistic health. In fact, I would argue that cookies (or any other food that makes you happy) is an essential part to holistic health. Making food decisions based purely in nutrition actually only considers one part of the whole system. Food choices based on what makes you thrive in mind body and spirit are truly holistic. For many of us, a diet deprived of sugar and dairy sounds healthy for our body, but not our mind and spirit. So go ahead and reach for that holiday cookie and enjoy every sugary morsel. Your holistic health will thank you.
